BIM Methodology Helps Design the World’s Longest Double-Decker Bridge, Saving Time and Costs

Connecting a Patchwork of Highways When PT. Wijaya Karya (WIKA), an Indonesia-based company that provides construction, mechanical and electrical services to the civil construction industry, was contracted to design the Design and Build Harbour Road 2 Project in North Jakarta, Indonesia, budgeted at USD $530 million, the project team quickly realized that traditional 2D design methods would not deliver the large and complex 8.95-kilometer toll road development on time and within budget. “The total volume of the concrete used in this project is a quarter of that of the Giza pyramid,” said Fery Safaria, engineering manager at WIKA. “The total scale of the project is about four times that of Vatican City.” The project was sorely needed as residents of Ancol and Pluit needed a more efficient way to travel between the cities, with the existing path a frequently congested …

Going Digital Is No Longer Optional

Cadalyst.com | By: Mark Coates It has now been seven decades since Alan Turing, the pioneer of modern computing and artificial intelligence, wrote, “I propose to consider the question, ‘Can machines think?’” Turing’s question has now been proven beyond doubt in many fields: In chess, the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue beat former chess grand master Garry Kasparov in 1997. In science, the HiSeq X genome-sequencing system can map tens of thousands of human genomes in a year — a task that initially took an army of scientists from 20 universities across the world more than 13 years to complete. In the construction and infrastructure realm, professionals now need to ask these questions: “Do you believe that machines can help you to think better? Do you believe that information and data can help you to work smarter?” What’s the Payoff? As …

Advancing the Utility of the Future With Connected Data

www.globalenergyworld.com The utility industry has experienced more change over the past decade than it has in over a century of operation. A handful of data points illustrate the historic transformation that is underway and quickly accelerating. According to the IHS Markit Global Power Industry Outlook, just 1% of U.S. power generation came from wind and solar in 2008. By 2018, that number had risen to 9%. IHS projects says it will reach 18% by 2028.   Similar projections about the growth of distributed energy resources (DER) such as rooftop solar, energy efficiency, and battery storage are easy to find. Indeed, Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) estimates that the global market for storage will double six times by 2030. For instance, Texas—the largest consumer of coal in the United States, according to the Energy Information Administration—has seen wind power generation surpass …

7 Amazing Examples of Digital Twin Technology In Practice

Forbes.com | By: Bernard Marr Wouldn’t it be extraordinary to simulate plans or build what-if scenarios for the products, facilities, and processes you wished to change before you actually put real-world resources behind real-world implementation? That’s the promise of digital twins. And, many businesses and industries are taking advantage of this promise as these 7 amazing examples of digital twin technology illustrate. What is a digital twin?  As an exact digital replica of something in the physical world, digital twins are made possible thanks to Internet of Things (IoT) sensors that gather data from the physical world and send it to machines to reconstruct. While the concept of a digital twin has been around since 2002 when Michael Grieves at the University of Michigan first used the terminology, it was IoT technology that made it affordable and accessible to many more …

Going Digital in Construction

CONSTRUCTECH.com | By Peggy Smedley Can machines help construction professionals think better? A recently released study by Bentley Systems implies many in the industry do not believe so—or, at the very least, their actions suggest they don’t. Of the 720 construction business professionals surveyed, just shy of half (44.3%) of the respondents in Bentley’s survey say they have limited or no insight into company or project performance. However, 45.2% say they do recognize the importance of collecting project data, they’re just not doing it or making the most of it. It’s a digital age, and data is a new type of currency. Businesses that aren’t capitalizing on digital processes and data-driven insights are missing out, and chances are their competition won’t make the same mistake for long. In construction, Bentley’s data reflects too many firms aren’t taking advantage of digital construction and the benefits …

Help Building Owners Get the BIM Data They Really Need

Cadalyst, USA. Ultimately, every player in a building project needs building information modeling data — but it must be rightsized for each unique contribution. AEC firms can offer clients a great service by helping them understand which portions of the BIM data will serve them best. For designers, builders, and constructors, building information modeling (BIM) increases clarity of vision: Modeling makes it easier to communicate design intent, to study performance, and to plan the physical coordination of tasks. This clarity is rooted in collaborative effort and shared purpose in bringing the building into existence.
